They said at the John Williams Film Music Prom that if he completes the score for the Star Wars nonology, it will be his equivalent of the Ring Cycle. In fact I think it might be longer than the Ring Cycle.

We went to see The Last Jedi yesterday afternoon. Broadly speaking, I enjoyed it. Of course, don't expect anything particularly deep or profound;
just enjoy the entertainment. The films can be pretty formulaic - from the Cantina Band in Episode IV through to the casino on Canto Bight here; and didn't the rebel base on the salt flats of Crait rather resemble the rebel base on the ice world of Hoth? Not to mention the obligatory cute and cuddly CGI animals, and their merchandising opportunities. And remember, it's a fairy tale, so don't be surprised that the twin sister of a Jedi knight can sense the approach of death, and dodge it. The Force would only be useful if you could do that sort of thing.

In general I've enjoyed the new generation of characters - Rey, Finn, Poe, and now Rose. However, the one weak point I felt was the assumption of command by Vice Admiral Holdo and Poe's mutiny. For me it was disappointing because it was just so stereotypical and unconvincingly wooden, a man intent on action and a woman intent on pragmatic retreat. But fundamentally, she was a poor communicator and therefore a poor leader - I couldn't tell whether she had a plan, or whether the rebel fleet stumbles upon Crait by chance. Her ultimate sacrifice was a clever twist, though.

Canonically speaking, I'm still none the wiser about who Snoke was or where he came from. I did like his guards, whom I thought had a passing resemblance to Escher's soldiers; not exactly those in Ascending and Descending, but I think there must be another picture I can't name with the tin hats. I'm indifferent about Kylo Ren; there are some interesting ideas - let's end this, Jedi and Sith - but he does boil down to a testosterone-fuelled moody adolescent with a lightsabre: Kim Jong-Ren, perhaps. Using a projection of Luke was clever, especially after Snoke's death.

As for Luke - still rather a wooden character, and a poor teacher; but then again, the Jedi Masters have always been reluctant at training their apprentices. Leia probably had the best line of the film: "I know what you're thinking - I've changed my hair!"

I suppose the death of Carrie Fisher marks a premature watershed for the saga; it would make no sense to re-cast that part, so in terms of original characters, we will be left with Chewbacca and the droids. Certainly I feel there's a challenge to produce a satisfactory conclusion in Episode IX.
