BBC Proms 2018

The early trailing of the season focused on anniversaries for Debussy and Parry, neither of which were of much interest to me, but in fact I have quite a long list which will need to be whittled down.

  • Prom 4 - every time I've been to see Shostakovich's Leningrad the quiet bits have been drowned out by noise, so it's tempting fate, but it has been on my playlist quite a lot recently

  • Prom 6 - Messiaen's Turangalîla

  • Prom 8 - Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto, and an opportunity to sample Lili Boulanger without Debussy or Ravel

  • Prom 10 - Widor's famous Toccata, and other light organ classics

  • Prom 14 - Overture to Die Meistersinger, Schubert songs, Liszt orchestrations, and Sibelius 7

  • Prom 17 - The Lark Ascending and others

  • Prom 18 - two Beethoven symphonies

  • Prom 31 - Bernstein, Gershwin and Ives

  • Prom 33 - Brahms German Requiem

  • Prom 37 - the Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia with a Haydn, Bernstein and Mahler programme

  • Prom 40 - Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, and others

  • Prom 42 - Pärt, Grieg, Sibelius

  • Prom 49 - Chopin and Tchaikovsky, followed by Prom 50 - Mozart and Mahler

  • Prom 55 - Brahms and Liszt, with the Budapest Festival Orchestra

  • Prom 60 - Marin Alsop with a Bernstein and Shostakovich programme

  • Prom 64 - Verdi's Requiem

  • Proms at ... Alexandra Palace - G&S Trial by Jury

  • Prom 69 - Shostakovich 4

  • Prom 70 - hoping for some Piazzolla at the Tango Prom

  • Prom 71 - an all-Berlioz event

Other notable events include late night proms featuring the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and Dido, Dido, and more Dido; a pair of concerts featuring the complete Brandenburg concerti interspersed with some UK premieres; Sir Simon Rattle with the LSO and an all-Ravel programme; Britten's War Requiem, Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande and Handel's Theodora.
